Neon Conceives The U.S. Blu-ray Release of 'Immaculate' Starring Sydney Sweeney June 11 German 4K Mediabook July 18

Neon's latest horror effort Immaculate from director Michael Mohan will birth its first domestic Blu-ray release on June 11th. Those who have moved on to digital streaming collecting will be able to pick up the film today, April 16th.
4K UHD collectors can look to import from Capelight in Germany.

Between The First Omen and Immaculate - 2024 has been one hell of a devilishly delicious year for religiously-themed female body horror films. Given recent legal events of the past couple of years in the U.S., the timing of these films couldn't be more perfect - and they're both actually pretty damn good! Now if we can get Late Night with the Devil on disc soon, we can have a devilishly great triple feature for the collections. Taking a page from Italian Giallo and Nunsploitation classics, Immaculate enjoyed a successful theatrical run and is ready to take over your home video collection. Neon hasn't been bountiful about the disc details of A/V specs or bonus features, but we have a firm street date and it's up for pre-order right now!

Immaculate - Blu-ray

Now for all those asking, "Where's the 4K, where's the 4K?" - well, right now you're going to have to import that. Thanks to Germany's Capelight Pictures. A two-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray Mediabook; this edition is set to offer Dolby Vision HDR (and HDR10), DTS-HD MA 5.1 in German and English language tracks. Capelight hasn't yet listed any bonus features yet either. For fans who don't want to wait for a 4K to maybe, hopefully, possibly get a 4K release here stateside, importing looks to be the best way to go. So far, no other foreign territories have offered up a 4K disc release, but that could change. We'll keep an eye out.

Immaculate - 4K UHD Mediabook (German Import)

Both of these releases are now up for pre-order. As soon as we get updated info for either of these releases or if another import release enters the market, we'll update listings ASAP - Happy collecting!

Take Those Old DVDs Off The Shelf - Criterion Announces July 2024 Blu-ray and 4K UHD Titles

The Criterion Collection's July's wave of 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray titles include Glauber Rocha's western Black God, White Devil on Blu-ray only; Wim Wenders' drama Perfect Days; Sam Peckinpah's western Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid; Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine; and Paul Brickman's classic Risky Business starring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay - all arriving on both formats.

Not only that, there is a 4K upgrade of Jean-Pierre Melville's classic, Le samouraĂŻ.

First up on July 2 comes Sam Peckinpah's western Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid - arriving on 4K UHD Blu-ray as well as Blu-ray.

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Sam Peckinpah’s cycle of genre-redefining westerns came to a close with this blood- and dust-caked elegy for the American West, which marries his renegade style with a fatalistic sense of finality. As newly minted lawman Pat Garrett (James Coburn) stalks the outlaw Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson) across the plains, their old friendship is twisted into rivalry, and mythic ideals of freedom come up against an emerging ruling-class order—all to the strains of a haunting soundtrack by Bob Dylan (who also appears as the mercurial Alias). Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid—presented here for the first time in three separate versions—stands as perhaps the maverick auteur’s richest, most mature work, a world-weary ballad that bears the solemn weight of history passing into legend.

The week after that on July 9, Jean-Pierre Melville's Le samouraĂŻ will be getting its long-awaited 4K UHD Blu-ray debut.

Le samouraĂŻ - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays Jef Costello, a contract killer with samurai instincts. After carrying out a flawlessly planned hit, Jef finds himself caught between a persistent police investigator and a ruthless employer, and not even his armor of fedora and trench coat can protect him. An elegantly stylized masterpiece of cool by maverick director Jean?Pierre Melville, Le samouraï is a razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology.

4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack

Then a Blu-ray of Glauber Rocha's Black God, White Devil will be hitting stores on July 16.

Black God, White Devil - The Criterion Collection

Myth, mysticism, and revolution collide in a blistering existential western from Glauber Rocha, the father of Brazil’s socially committed Cinema Novo movement. After killing his swindling boss, ranch hand Manoel (Geraldo Del Rey) goes on the run with his wife, Rosa (Yona? Magalha?es). In the stark hinterlands, they join forces with armed bandits and pledge allegiance to a self-styled holy man who preaches revolt against rich landowners while perpetrating unspeakable acts of violence against the innocent. Suffused with antiauthoritarian fervor and the intensity of life in the desert, this landmark work of radical cinema is a scorched-earth allegory about mindless fanaticism and the allure of dead-end ideologies.

TWO-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • Audio commentary by restoration producer Lino Meireles
  • New interview with film scholar Richard Peña

New cover based on the original poster by Rogério Duarte

Also on July 16, Wim Wenders' Perfect Days will be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray.

Perfect Days - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

A perfect song that hits at just the right moment, the play of sunlight through leaves, a fleeting moment of human connection in a vast metropolis: the wonders of everyday life come into breathtaking focus in this profoundly moving film by Wim Wenders. In a radiant, Cannes-award-winning performance of few words but extraordinary expressiveness, Koji Yakusho plays a public-toilet cleaner in Tokyo whose rich inner world is gradually revealed through his small exchanges with those around him and with the city itself. Channeling his idol Yasujiro Ozu, Wenders crafts a serenely minimalist ode to the miracle that is the here and now.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • 4K digital master, approved by director Wim Wenders, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features
  • New interview with Wenders

  • Interview with producer Koji Yanai, founder of the Tokyo Toilet project
  • Trailer
  • PLUS: An essay by film critic Bilge Ebiri

    New cover by Michael Boland

Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine will be available on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on July 23.

Farewell My Concubine - The Criterion Collection 4K UHD Ultra HD Blu-ray

A breathtakingly intimate romance unfolds against a sweeping backdrop of social upheaval in renowned director Chen Kaige’s sumptuous saga of passion, fate, and the transcendent possibilities of art. Spanning fifty years of twentieth-century Chinese history, Farewell My Concubine follows aspiring actors Dieyi (a heartbreaking Leslie Cheung) and Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi) as they emerge from a childhood of brutal training to become Beijing-opera stars, with life mirroring art as Dieyi’s unrequited love for Xiaolou and the country’s changing political tides engulf them in their own personal tragedies of jealousy and betrayal. The first Chinese film to win the Palme d’Or is epic filmmaking of the highest order—visually and emotionally ravishing from frame to exquisite frame.

And finally the film that launched Tom Cruise into super-stardom, Paul Brickman's Risky Business will hit stores on 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray on the same date.

Risky Business - The Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

A sly piece of pop subversion, this irresistible satire of Reagan-era materialism features Tom Cruise in his star-is-born breakthrough as a Chicago suburban prepster whose college-bound life spirals out of control when his parents go out of town for the week and an enterprising call girl (Rebecca De Mornay) invites him to walk on the wild side. While Cruise boogying in his briefs yielded one of the most iconic pop-cultural moments of the 1980s, it is the film’s unexpected mix of tender romance (enhanced by a moody synth score by Tangerine Dream) and sharp-witted capitalist critique that remains fresh and daring.

DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES

  • New 4K digital restorations of the director’s cut and the original theatrical release, supervised and approved by director Paul Brickman and producer Jon Avnet, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks

Happy IRS Day! - Spend Your Refund with HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Apr 15, 2024

Happy IRS day! Got a big refund coming? Dolby is tugging at your refund check. That is, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision! And how bout that backlog of discs?

We get another below average slow week this week, with another disc-ocalypse just around the corner. If every week were busy, burning the candle at both ends would not really be very sustainable, agreed?

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 46 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of April 14th - April 20th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

We actually do have a new release this week, that being Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: The Final Season, brought to us via Paramount. And since it's a final season, why not include The Complete Series while we are it it? Let us also offer up the obvious money grab, Jack Ryan Ultimate 5-Movie Collection. Maybe you held off buying this collection?

From the Criterion Collection, Hungarian film Werckmeister Harmonies.

On the delayed list, The Faculty from Shout Factory to an undetermined date, and High Noon from Kino Lorber to May 7th. The latter still shows up on Amazon for a release this week, but official listings at Kino Lorber indicate otherwise.

Word of caution -- Disc-ocalypse, part two is just 2 weeks away!

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases includes Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: The Final Season (not available to order at press time-alternate WALMART LINK) and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: The Complete Series from Paramount. Also available, Werckmeister Harmonies from Criterion.

For the rest of this category, it is a bit slow. But as always, here are the highlights...

Shout Factory has a new 'Select' release of 1997 drama Affliction.

Kino Lorber has updated releases of Fletch and Fletch Lives.

Universal has the latest comedy sequel, Half Baked: Totally High. Amazon has their stupid Allied Vaughn placeholder for the studio still, but it really is Universal.

Also from Universal, the latest season in the series, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die.

From Sony Pictures, 1991 crime drama City of Hope. Under the Sony Pictures Classics label (NOT Allied Vaughn as Amazon shows), the Polish animated drama The Peasants.

Just one release in the anime category this week, Rozen Maiden: The Complete Series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks - Season Four comes to disc this week via Paramount.

Notable announcements from last week:

In the 'You're Welcome' category, Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart: Reprise  will be coming to domestic 4K from LionsGate on May 7th. You're Welcome because I bought the import literally a month ago. Any other titles you would like me to import?

Warner Bros. has announced that Dune: Part Two will be coming to blu-ray and 4K on May 14th. Specs would indicate it will *not* include the IMAX ratio.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that Madame Web will be released on April 30th to blu-ray and 4K format.

In entertainment industry news, Universal All-Access Rewards will be completely closed on July 31st. Seldom did this program offer physical rewards, but I would use it to add digital copies to my locker of titles that often times got licensed out to boutique labels for disc production. Boutique labels almost never include digital copies, so that was a nice side gig.

Which titles are you buying this week? Which ones are on your wishlist, be it to buy as an impulse buy or to wait for the right price?

Redeem Those Points! Universal All-Access Rewards Closing June 30th 2024

Have you been redeeming those digital copy slips that come with your discs? Universal Studios' popular rewards program Universal All-Access which lets you redeem points for swag, tickets, and digital copies will be closing on June 30th. Last day to redeem points will be July 31st, 2024

For a number of film fans out there who have loved building a physical media collection, they've also been building their digital streaming collections redeeming the codes on those little slips of paper. Like fellow studios Disney and Sony, Universal Studios gave collectors a little extra incentive with their own branded rewards program - Universal All-Access. This service gave members the opportunity for a little extra juice from their media purchases by redeeming their accumulated points for fun swag items like posters and such, movie tickets, or redeem for more digital copies of favorite films. Every month a new batch of rewards would arrive giving you all the more reason to keep redeeming those codes. Well, that's all coming to a close within the next three months.

Per an email that was sent out to members this morning, Universal All-Access' last days are on the horizon. The final day to redeem codes for their point values will be June 30th. The last day to redeem those points will be July 31st. As a parting gesture to users, the final batch of new digital rewards will go live in June and they're saying it's supposed to be a much larger selection than normal. So if you've been hoarding those points (I regularly forget to redeem them for rewards and have over 21,000 points), you'll only have a couple of months to get all the goodies you can.

Here's what was in the email:

"Dear Valued Members,

  • We regret to inform you that the Universal All-Access Rewards Program will be closing on June 30th, 2024 with points redemption opportunities remaining open until July 31st, 2024. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your loyalty and enthusiastic participation in our rewards program, which has been centered around our shared love for movies.
  • As we wind down the program, we encourage you to redeem your accumulated points by exploring the new rewards for March.

Please note the following important dates and information regarding the program’s closure:

  1. Last Day to Earn Points: The last day to earn points is June 30th, 2024. We encourage you to make any planned movie purchases by this date to maximize your Points earning potential.
  2. Last Day to Redeem Points: The last day to redeem points is July 31st, 2024. We encourage you to redeem any outstanding rewards points accumulated by this date. Any points not redeemed by this date will be forfeited.
  3. Redeeming Your Points: You can continue to redeem points for rewards until July 31st, 2024. In a special final gesture, we're excited to announce that the last batch of free movie rewards, available in early June, will be significantly larger than usual, providing an extensive selection for you to choose from. This is our way of saying thank you and ensuring you have ample opportunity to enjoy a wide array of movies, making the most of your accumulated points. Stay tuned for more details.
  4. Customer Support: Our customer service team is here to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have about this change. Whether you need help with redeeming your points or have questions about your account, we’re here to ensure a smooth transition.
  • We understand this may be disappointing news, and we want to extend our sincerest appreciation for your engagement with the Universal All-Access Rewards Program. Your passion for movies has made this program a wonderful journey, and we’re excited about what the future holds for our community.
  • Please expect further communications over the next few months regarding the closure to ensure you are fully informed. Should you have any questions or require assistance, please reach out to our Customer Support Team.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

Best regards,
Universal All-Access Rewards Staff"

That just about does it. While it sucks to see the program close - it's been a nice and easy way to grow my digital collection, I'm glad they're not simply turning the faucet off. You've got time to get those reward slip codes in and they're at least going to be adding more titles to the program for a couple more months so you can burn through those points.

The Physical Media Must Flow - 'Dune: Part Two' Drinks the Water of 4K & Blu-ray May 14th

Shai-Hulud be praised! The wait for Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two arrives on physical media May 14th. After a triumphant return to theaters easily besting its predecessor's pandemic-era box office haul, Dune: Part Two currently sits as the biggest global earner of 2024. Digital rental and sales start April 16th

Now that the wait for a disc release is nearly over, all we have to do now is wait for Villeneuve to start directing Dune: Messiah! The various Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and SteelBook releases of Dune: Part Two have been up for Pre-order for a while now, so it's nice to see a confirmed street date and some definite specs. The press release doesn't list the HDR Grade, but Part One enjoyed a lovely Dolby Vision transfer so it's a safe bet this one will too. The PR does state Atmos in the specs so riding sandworms should sound incredible at home! Sadly, it doesn't look like sandworm popcorn bucket packaging will be an option...

It's Madamin' Time! 'Madame Web' Spins Up a 4K UHD, Blu-ray, & SteelBook Release April 30th

Witness the origin of all of the Dakota Johnson memes with Sony's Madame Web! The latest extension into the Spider-Man universe can be yours on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and a limited edition SteelBook April 30th

Some movies are made to entertain, and some movies entertain because they become awkward memes. From the first trailer, Madame Web didn't have an easy time getting fans excited for this latest Spider-Man spin-off (no pun intended). Bad reviews, poor box office, and some amazing Dakota Johnson interviews later the film is finally coming home to Blu-ray and 4K UHD letting you research spiders in the Amazon...

Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

Picnic at the Empire State Building - HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Apr 7, 2024

Is not a lot of witticism to open with this week, it basically being an ordinary slow week. As far as physical media and entertainment, we keep chugging along.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 45 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of April 7th - April 13th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

4K catalog week, part deux, or is it part tres. No matter, here's what to look for this week. Two weeks to the next wallet-buster.

From Paramount Pictures, the SteelBook of King Kong (1976). Shout Factory very recently did a blu-ray release of this one. The lesson we learned from the Shout release was not to go in with high expectations as the source material has a few issues. Still, I expect this release to look the best of all the previous releases.

From the Criterion Collection, Picnic at Hanging Rock. When I ordered the Second Sight UK fat-pack some time back, I did so knowing full well that Criterion would probably be doing a US release. But at the same time, Criterion does not offer it in a fancy edition or a swag filled fat-pack, so I am still happy with what I got.

From Massacre Video and (maybe) this week, action/horror Postal.

Closing out the category, an MPI Mediabook of Don Lee's The Roundup: No Way Out. For now, to get the original film with a Mediabook, it's blu-ray only.

Blu-ray releases-

Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases? This week look for The Roundup: No Way Out, in a standard edition blu-ray.

The rest of the category has a little bit of wallet-recharge vibe to it. Here are a few things though that you may want to ponder.

Two entries from Universal Pictures, Lisa Frankenstein: Collector's Edition and Night Swim: Collector's Edition. Are studios overusing the term Collector's Edition? If you are hollaring Where's the 4K? to truly make it a Collector's Edition, I won't disagree with you here. Not every movie gets such a physical release, but then some just seem inevitable. Whether a 4K double-dip is on our future, by Universal or Turbine, that is to be determined. [Edit: A UK 4K edition for Lisa Frankenstein is already available for preorder with a sttreet date in June, and it looks like Night Swim is coming in May, so, back to posing the original question to Universal/Blumhouse. Some people don't link importing though as there is a small chance of compatibility issues. Often times the enclose blu-ray on these UK releases are region locked.]

Doom Patrol: The Complete Fourth and Final Season comes to us via Warner Bros. You can also get a Complete Series set if you waited for this point of the series.

From the MVD Rewind Collection label, action flick Mean Guns: Collector's Edition.

The only Anime Highlight this week is Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time Super Extra (Season 2). I feel like we have been stuck at the previous season for awhile, so this is quite welcome.

If you have been waiting for the non-Walmart Exclusive edition of Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey, it comes as a standard release this week. Can you believe there are already two sequels to this? One is already made, the other is in the works. The film was made on a low budget, and there are a couple of territories which it is available as a 4K disc, but those releases are probably not much of an upgrade.

Worthy Mention: Fourteen years after Warner Bros releases it, Shout Factory brings us a new edition of Lost in Space: Collector's Edition.

Notable announcements from last week:

Paramount has revealed the next Paramount Presents label title to be Chinatown, as a 4K release with a bonus blu-ray of Two Jakes. Expect to see this release June 18th.

LionsGate will be releasing a blu-ray of Blumhouse's Imaginary on May 14th. Yup, I will say it again this time .... Blumhouse, what's with the lack of 4K releases of so much of your library? Time to catch up with 2024.

Shout Factory's various labels have revealed releases for June. They are an interesting slate that include Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, Matinee 4K, Robocop (2014) 4K, Robocop 2 4K,  The First Slam Dunk and Species II 4K. Yeah, my video wall is probably going to burst with that slate.

We Ain't Fool'n You - April 2024 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Shopping Guide

Now that we've gotten past the intense craziness of three James Cameron releases all in one shot, we can get back to enjoying a full schedule of exciting new and catalog titles on everyone's favorite 2160p disc format.

If March wasn't busy enough, one specific director dominated the release slate with three of his biggest hits delivering three impressive albeit controversial discs. Compounding the problem was the scarcity issue as online retailers struggled to get product out failing to meet preorders by weeks at a time. Well, now that's all over with, we can get back looking at some new and exciting gems while letting our wallets recover a bit. Overall April is a pretty slim month compared to recent frames, but what's coming in is pretty exciting. We have a range of new recent theatrical hits on top of a nice selection of deep-cut comedy, action, drama, and horror titles debuting on the format.

April 2024 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Shopping Guide

April 2nd, 4K UHD Releases

The first week of the month is a mix of reissues, rescheduled, with a couple of eclectic catalog titles. Who'da thought that Cutthroat Island would come to 4K UHD, let alone command a SteelBook release at that? Major League is a sports comedy classic so let's hope it looks and sounds great!

Now, we have seen images of new Mondo X 4K SteelBooks for Doctor StrangeThe Avengers, Black Panther, and Guardians of the Galaxy popping up. Supposedly these are Walmart exclusives, but we couldn't find them on Walmart's website so we don't know if the release has been pushed back, or if they're so limited you can't order them online at all. We'll keep an eye out all the same and update if that changes. And just like that things change, the Mondo Walmart Exclusive Marvel SteelBooks are now available online and in stores, but they are selling fast!

Technically arriving April, 5th since it's a music release:

April 9th, 4K UHD Releases

The second frame of the month sees a little bit of a slowdown. A small mix of new and catalog titles, it gives us a slight financial breather but there are still some good ones to keep an eye on.

April 16th, 4K UHD Releases

For another quiet week, how well did you enjoy the cinematic and television versions of Tom Clancy's favorite CIA analyst? The only other major new 4K release this frame is only one of the greatest films ever made...

April 23rd, 4K UHD Releases

A busy frame from one end to the next, it's also a pretty wild and eclectic slate featuring some classic exploitation flicks, animated superheroes, weepy dramas, Jason Statham, and the movie that finally nabbed Scorsese his Best Director Oscar.

April 30th, 4K UHD Releases

Not to go out quietly, April ends on one of the busiest, most diverse notes for new title and catalog 4K releases.

And that is what we have for domestic 4K releases aiming to crash into our collections through the month of April. It starts slow, but some great titles are coming and the final week of the month is a hell of a frame (and an expensive one!). As always some of these release dates could be changed and some last-minute releases have been known to sneak in - if and when that happens we'll update the shopping guide ASAP. Until then - Happy Collecting!

The animated feature film is based on the manga "Slam Dunk" by Takehiko Inoue and has broken box-office records in several countries and won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Animation in 2023.

Born and raised in Okinawa, Ryota had a brother who was three years older. Following in the footsteps of his older brother, who was a famous local player from a young age, Ryota also became addicted to basketball.

In his second year of high school, Ryota plays with the Shohoku High School basketball team along with Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui as they take the stage at the Inter-High School National Championship. And now, they are on the brink of challenging the reigning champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School.

HDD's 4K UHD & Blu-ray Shopping Guide, Mar 31, 2024 is Brought To You By...

Just a little quote from Major League (and there were some good ones, but most of them were too long for a title):

Harry Doyle: The post-game show is brought to you by...
    [searches through his papers]
Harry Doyle: Christ, I can't find it. To hell with it.

The right answer is of course Amazon, Walmart and readers like you for using our links to shop.

With the week of Easter upon us, an average week of 4K disc releases this week, how well did you fare last week? I'd be lying if I said I bought nothing.

Welcome to Volume 4 Episode 44 of our weekly release guide. A look at the highlights of what's coming to disc the week of March 31st - April 6th, as well as a look at announcements from last week.

4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases-

Another week of catalog titles in the 4K category, which is A-OK as there are so many releases we would like to see!

Coming off the wish list and moved to the now list, first from Paramount Pictures, sports comedy Major League. This one is also available as a SteelBook edition.

And next, from Criterion collection, French drama La haine.

Next, let's put a spotlight on Walmart for taking over the "Exclusive SteelBook Edition" releases after Best Buy chose to abandon physical media. This week all the exclusives are LionsGate releases. Debuting to 4K disc for the first time, action/adventure Cutthroat Island. Currently out of stock, just keep checking is the advice I would give you. Just this past week I ordered Silent Night 4K, it was out of stock since release date (January) but is now available again.

Next are a few double (or triple or quadruple, or I lost count) dips, we see where John Rambo started and ended, referring to First Blood and Last Blood. These are the kind of releases that if you "maybe" want them, but then hold off and miss out, you might kick yourself. Sounds like a justifiable excuse, no?

And if you know which movies I am referring to when I say retired and extremely dangerous, you win bragging rights this week! Formerly available as single releases, and an obsure 2-movie collection that went OOP, now you can get Red 1 & 2 as a Walmart Exclusive SteelBook. I call these sleeper titles, I had never heard of them, then sat down and watched the first and was pretty impressed, so I had to seek the sequel as well, then of course 4K.

Next week, more of the same with regards to it being a catalog title week. Still ample opportunities to spend spend spend.

Blu-ray releases-

There are no Blu-ray counterparts of the above 4K releases, hey, recharge that wallet from last week right?

As far as blu-ray releases in general this week, there are a lot of "B" titles on the list. One person's junk is another person's treasure. Without judgment, here are the highlights.

Notable announcements from last week:

Warner Bros has announced an offical street date of May 14th for American Sniper to 4K disc. In their standard formula, the UK will be getting a more elaborate release with more special features and swag. Editor Matthew Hartman made a comparison of the UK getting a far superior release of this film to the UK getting an all out deluxe release of The Patriot (Mel Gibson). I would love to hear from Warner Bros why they think the US market doesn't want the nicer releases. I know they tried it in the past, but those releases had f'ugly covers and less desirable swag.

Last week I mentioned that Se7en was likely going to be released in May. No sooner did the article publish and we found out the film is getting an IMAX revisit and a newer scan, so it has been pushed to probably Winter 2024.

Arrow Video has announced their June 2024 titles. American Gigolo will be available on blu-ray, 4K and an Arrow Store Exclusive 4K. The latter offers a much better cover art, nothing else, but that's enough for me to order it. Mute Witness will also be getting a blu-ray and 4K release. Arrow UK will also be releasing Withnail and I and Madman to 4K. Madman was released by Vinegar Syndrome last year. For UK blu-ray, they will be releasing Nightsiren (Svetlonoc) as well.

Blue Underground Reveals 'Goodbye Uncle Tom' Restored and Uncut 4K UHD & Blu-ray April 23rd

Blue Underground presents directors Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi's infamous 1971 Italian mondo-docudrama Goodbye Uncle Tom in limited edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray releases arriving April 23.

The American south slave trade themed shocker was so graphic that the film was heavily cut in the U.S. prior to its release - with Roger Ebert calling this cut version, “… the most disgusting, contemptuous insult to decency ever to masquerade as a documentary.” Blue Underground includes both the original uncut Italian version and the cut version fully restored in 4K from the original camera negatives.

The film considered too shocking for the world! Written, edited, produced and directed by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi of MONDO CANE fame, this epic recreation of the American slave trade atrocities was both condemned as depraved exploitation and acclaimed as an unprecedented cry of Black anguish and rage. The Detroit Chronicle hailed it as "a graphic, moving, nerve-paralyzing film." Legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it "the most specific and rabid incitement of the race war." It became one of the most reviled and misunderstood films of its time. Five decades cannot diminish GOODBYE UNCLE TOM's impact or quiet its controversy as it has become even more relevant TODAY!

In 1971, distributors forced the filmmakers to completely re-cut the film and radically re-write its extreme narration, removing more than 13 minute of race-war politics and inserting alternate scenes - creating what would become an entirely different film - before it could be released. Now more than 50 years later, both versions of GOODBYE UNCLE TOM can finally be seen in brand-new restorations, scanned in 4K 16-bit from their original negatives, with Dolby Vision HDR (on the 4K Blu-ray) & newly restored DTS-HD Master Audio, and packed with over 5 hours of Extras!

The Game Of Clones: Bruceploitation Collection, Vol.1 (Limited Edition Website Exclusive)

“Many films tried to capitalize on the popularity of Bruce Lee. Some amped up the craziness as far as it would go. Others played it straight, delivering seriously good films. At its best, Bruceploitation was some of the most uninhibited and exciting martial arts cinema of the age.”

 Den Of Geek

Hours after Bruce Lee’s death, Bruceploitation was born. And for the next 10 years, talented martial artists were enlisted to mimic iconic aspects of Lee’s life, style and mannerisms. Fueled by equal parts deception and demand, these films instead created one of the most wildly entertaining sub-genres in movie history. THE GAME OF CLONES: BRUCEPLOITATION COLLECTION, VOLUME 1 now presents 14 of the very best – and frequently very bizarre – films starring Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, Bruce Liang and more, all restored for the first time ever from original film elements.

Each of these 14 Bruceploitation classics – THE CLONES OF BRUCE LEE (1980), ENTER THREE DRAGONS (1978), ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH (1978), GOOD BYE, BRUCE LEE: HIS LAST GAME OF DEATH (1975), THE DRAGON LIVES AGAIN (1977), BRUCE AND THE IRON FINGER (1977), CHALLENGE OF THE TIGER (1980), CAMEROON CONNECTION (1984), SUPER DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY (1974), THE DRAGON LIVES (1976), THE DRAGON, THE HERO (1980), RAGE OF THE DRAGON (1980), THE BLACK DRAGON VS. THE YELLOW TIGER (1974), and the never-before available THE BIG BOSS PART II (1976) – also feature exclusive bonus programming that includes all-new interviews, audio commentaries and revealing featurettes, as well as a 100-page Bruceploitation book filled with essays, posters, rare photos and more.

Enter the Clones of Bruce

In the “fascinating gem of a documentary” (Culture Mix) ENTER THE CLONES OF BRUCE, director David Gregory tracks down the surviving Bruces – along with martial arts legends, producers, directors, distributors, historians and more – to reveal the entire shocking and bittersweet saga behind a celluloid phenomenon that still refuses to die. Gregory – whose award-winning documentaries include LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY’S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU and BLOOD & FLESH: THE REEL LIFE & GHASTLY DEATH OF AL ADAMSON – now examines this fascinating phenomenon via interviews with Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Bruce Liang and Dragon Lee; martial arts legends like Angela Mao, David Chiang, Phillip Ko and Sammo Hung; and the producers, directors, distributors and experts – along with copious clips from the films themselves – that for the first time reveal the history, controversy and legacy behind one of the most bizarre genres in movie history. The documentary will also be available on all leading digital outlets on April 30, and as a standalone Blu-ray on May 21.

There is more to karate than fighting. This is the lesson that Daniel (Ralph Macchio), a San Fernando Valley teenager, is about to learn from a most unexpected teacher: Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita in his Academy Award®-nominated performance, Best Supporting Actor, 1984), an elderly handyman who also happens to be a master of the martial arts. His training and these vital lessons will be called into play when an outmatched Daniel faces Johnny (William Zabka), the skilled leader of the Cobra Kai — a vicious gang of karate school bullies — in a no-holds-barred karate tournament for the championship of the Valley.

Crowdfund Your Entertainment - 3-D Film Archive, Deaf Crocodile, & Rifftrax on Kickstarter Right Now!

If keeping up with your collection wasn't already tough enough, some amazing independent labels dropped some great opportunities on Kickstarter! 3-D Film Archive, Deaf Crocodile, and Rifftrax have some exciting campaigns running right now!

Sometimes a project needs a little extra cash or a guaranteed number of sales to get going. Ever since crowdfunding took off, it's been a fantastic revenue stream for independent levels and entertainers to fund their next projects. Restorations of films and media of all kinds is rarely cheap. It's often a laborious process and if a title is a little obscure or not a big noteworthy release, the prospect of funding a project like that out-of-pocket can be dodgy financially. In recent years Kickstarter and other crowdfunding sources have become a haven for companies to not only fund their restoration efforts but also guarantee a number of unit sales. Right now on Kickstarter, there are a bunch of great campaigns rolling that physical media fans won't want to miss out on.

Deaf Crocodile - Aleksandr Ptushko Fantastika Box

Ilya MurometsSampo, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, and the upcoming Ruslan and Ludmila. These discs are the same ones available through Vinegar Syndrome's Partner Label selections, but now with a new box set and new slipcovers. But what if you already have the previous Ilya MurometsSampo, and The Tale of Tsar Saltan discs? Don't worry, the great people at Deaf Crocodile has your back. You can pick up the box on its own for $20 or snag the box with a copy of Ruslan and Ludmila with the Vinegar Syndrome slipcover for $50! So you've got some nice cash-affordable options if you don't want to break the bank re-purchasing discs you already have. But act fast - as of this writing there are only four days left in the campaign!

3-D Film Archive - Arch Obler's Domo Arigato 3-D

Next, the masters of stereoscopic Blu-ray releases, 3-D Film Archive has designs to unleash Arch Obler's final film Domo Arigato with a new fully restored 3-D Blu-ray release. No stranger to the crowdfunding process, 3-D Film Archive had delivered incredible 3-D Blu-ray releases time and again. Their previous crowdfunding effort Robot Monster was a phenomenal success and this shouldn't be any less impressive. The entry point for this release is nice and low; $30 guarantees your copy. Stretch goals have already flown by so you're going to get a fully-loaded disc with plenty of great bonus features. Now if you don't have a 3-D ready TV or projector, do not worry, this disc will also include an Anaglyph 3-D (Red/Cyan) version with a pair of glasses so you can experience the film on any home theater setup. As of this writing, you have nine days left in the campaign. So a little time yet to jump on the preorder option, but don't wait too long!

Rifftrax Live - Point Break!

For years now, MST3K alums Mike, Kevin, and Bill have been delivering hilarious new commentaries for our favorite A-list blockbusters and Z-list forgotten gems. A staple of Rifftrax has been their annual live-show events streamed to theaters. Past heavy hitters included Plan 9 From Outer SpaceReturn of Swamp ThingThe Room and the biggest title (so far) has been Starship Troopers. MKB and the Rifftrax team are digging in for their biggest show yet - Point Break! That's right, the classic 90s Swayzee/Reeves action thriller will be riffed live in theaters across the country. Backers can choose their entry point to get a bunch of swag items and digital goodies, but best of all - there will be a physical media release for this show! Unlike Starship Troopers and Anaconda which only got a studio-recorded commentary track, we'll be able to enjoy the full show on DVD or Blu-ray! The campaign was quickly funded and stretch goals were destroyed opening up a Blu-ray release option! But to get that physical media option, you do have to punch in at the $100 tier level, but if you just want a digital release - you can opt-in at $40 to secure your spot. As of this writing, the show is already fully funded with fourteen days left in the campaign.

Luc Besson's action thriller classic La Femme Nikita aims for its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from Sony on June 11th with a single-disc SteelBook release.

And just like that, Sony keeps the deep catalog classics coming. On top of their massive range of Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary releases, Sony is making sure fans keep feeling that collecting pinch with another heavy from their archive. La Femme Nikita (or just "Nikita" depending on where you live in the world) was a surprise smash hit for Luc Besson leaping from the Parisian theater houses to become an international sensation spawning the Americanized remake No Return and the Hong Kong version Black Cat. Nearly 35 years after its theatrical run, we'll soon be able to enjoy this great action thriller in full Dolby Vision glory!

La Femme Nikita - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray SteelBook

From director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) comes the must-see thriller about a vicious street punk turned sexy, sophisticated and lethally dangerous assassin. Starring Anne Parillaud, Jeanne Moreau and Jean Reno, La Femme Nikita is "slick, stylish and tremendously entertaining" (The New York Times)! Rescued from death row by a top-secret agency, Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is slowly transformed from a cop-killing junkie into a cold-blooded bombshell with a license to kill. But when she begins the deadliest mission of her career, only to fall for a man who knows nothing of her true identity, Nikita discovers that in the dark and ruthless world of espionage, the greatest casualty of all...is true love.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Game of Thrones: Book vs. Screen, The Croods, Voicemail Attack!

There's a lot going on in this week's show. Some good, same bad, most of it I've already forgotten. Moreno get serious about his love of the Game of Thrones books and explains to us why the hardcore fans of the pages are getting a little pissed with the TV show. The boys take some voicemails where they are handed reviews for OBLIVION and LORDS OF SALEM, asked for their take on the ridiculous price of movie-going, and consider this month's Podcast Movie Commentary. Law watches a bunch of random awful movies (JACK & JILL, THE SITTER), revisits a couple great ones (STEP BROTHERS, ROLE MODELS), tries to act like he knows stuff about CLOUD ATLAS (he doesn't), and comments on the evolution of douchebaggery in Dane Cook's stand up specials.

JoBlo Movie Podcast: Your 2013 Hottie Champion! Early Word on Iron Man 3 & Oldboy! Tons of reviews!

There's also early looks at IRON MAN 3 and OLDBOY from fans of the site, reviews of THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE, MEN IN SUITS, 'Top of the Lake', 'In the Flesh', and, of course, the 2013 March Madness of Hotties Champion. Like I said, it's jam packed with passionate love. And gin.

Damn Goldblum, you sexy!
